Republican Joan Winters joins race for State Auditor

The race for State Auditor now has a Republican candidate. Joan Winters announced her candidacy to replace 30-year incumbent Republican Tom Wagner who announced he’s retiring earlier this year.

Winters has an extensive career in accounting. For the past 27 years, she has been a Certified Public Accountant at Mitten and Winters in Dover.

This is her first run for political office, but she says her qualifications suit the position and she will not be swayed by political agendas.

“I just want to make sure that experienced people are in this office. It’s just too important of an office not to have the experience and the qualification. And the integrity—not to be swayed by any of the parties that are out there,” said Winters.

Winters has served as the only CPA on Delaware’s tax appeal board for the past 18 years.

“As a CPA I’m held to the highest level of standards in public accounting. My integrity speaks for itself and I think the integrity and the independence of the office is very important,” she said.

Winters is set to face the winner of a Democratic primary election between Kathy McGuiness, Dennis E.Williams and Kathleen Davies.
