Rehabilitation work ongoing on Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes

Delaware Tourism Office
The 89-year-old Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes is getting a makeover.

The Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes is getting a facelift.

The Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs started the rehabilitation effort two weeks ago with exterior work on the Museum.

“Which involves the cleaning of the entire brick masonry block, including the ornamental features, all the painted surfaces and they’ll be doing all the exterior wood and prepping and painting and refurbishing all those exterior elements,” said Lynn Riley - the manager of the cultural asset management program for the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs.

Riley notes the work on the  89-year-old museum in Lewes also includes some other exterior details/

“They’ll also be replacing three sets of the special deck-designed wooden shutters that are on the Museum. Those have been repaired many times in the past but they have reached the point where they actually need to be re-fabricated and we’ll be using the same materials and colors and design.”

The rehab work is expected to last at least another two weeks.

The project cost is $23,460, paid for with money from Delaware’s Bond Bill.

Riley says the Museum is open while the work is being done. But coronavirus pandemic restrictions limit visits to 30-minute, self-guided tours by advance registration only on Fridays and Saturdays.

Admission to the Zwaanendael Museum is free. You can call (302) 645-1148 to make reservations.
