The novel coronavirus is driving the need for healthy blood donors.

The American Red Crossand theBlood Bank of Delmarva are asking for help to  strengthen the region’s blood supply as COVID-19 worries build.

“Cold and flu season have already impacted the ability for many of our donors to give blood. So concerns about the Coronavirus just continue to compound on that," said Alana Mauger with the American Red Cross.

Maugersays they need healthy blood and platelet donors to keep their appointments and for community partners go ahead with upcoming blood drives.

“People have a fear of going out in the public right now. People may have colds and flu; people may be infected with Coronavirus (cases have been reported in DE, PA, MD, VA and NJ). So if you have a fever, if you have a cold, you’re not eligible to donate - that’s normal protocol. But we find that some people might be more concerned about coming out,' said Mauger. "So we’re seeing lower donors.”

Mauger says her organization needs to collect around 600 units of blood everyday to meet patient demand.  And she notes giving blood remains safe.

“The good news is - that there is no evidence of Coronavirus or any other respiratory virus being transmitted through blood transfusions," said Mauger. "So the blood supply is as safe as it has been.”

Mauger says in anticipation of blood drive cancellations and low donor turn-out at centers, the Blood Bank of Delmarva is seeking to double the blood reserves now to prevent shortages.

Blood donation appointments can be made  here or here.
