Velda Jones-Potter was appointed State Treasurer in January 2009. To remain in the office, she needs to win not one, but two elections in 2010.
Jones-Potter was appointed State Treasurer by Governor Jack Markell when he vacated the office following his win in the 2008 gubernatorial race. Jones-Potter faces Wilmington attorney Chip Flowers in the September 14th Democratic primary. The winner meets Republican Colin Bonini in the November 2nd general election.
Jones-Potter is campaigning on her record since taking over as State Treasurer. She points to Delaware’s continued Triple-A (AAA) bond rating, her commitment to invest and keep taxpayer dollars in Delaware banks, and her effort to promote financial education throughout the state.
DFM News sat down with Jones-Potter to discuss her candidacy and positions, including the recent controversy over her consulting contract with the City of Wilmington. That contract has paid Jones-Potter over $100,000 since 2007 to teach a leadership program for city employees.
