The race for state treasurer: Chip Flowers

Delaware voters’ first chance to weigh in on who will be next state treasurer comes in the September 14th Democratic primary.  That pits attorney Chip Flowers against current State Treasurer Velda Jones-Potter for the right to face Republican State Senator Colin Bonini in November’s general election.

Flowers is making his first bid for elected office.  He launched his candidacy in August 2009, before Jones-Potter announced she would seek to stay in the office.  Jones-Potter was appointed to her position by Governor Jack Markell when Markell vacated the office following his victory in the 2008 Governor’s race. At the heart of Flowers’ campaign is a plan that re-imagines the state treasurer’s role in guiding the state’s finances and economy.  He sees it growing beyond what he calls a “check processing and check-issuing office” to a policy office.
