Parking rates increase in the City of Rehoboth

The Rehoboth Beach Board of Commissioners recently voted to finalize parking changes in the resort starting this summer.

Parking in Rehoboth Beach is going to cost you more starting this summer.

Rehoboth Mayor Paul Kuhnssays in an effort to free up spaces in the busiest, most desirable areas of downtown - some significant parking changes are on the way.

“We’ve changed around some of the time restrictions on the commercial district parking. As well as, we’ve raised some of the prices for the meters. We’ve also extended the year or the season of  the parking permits in the neighborhoods,” Kuhns said.

Rehoboth is extending meter limits on Rehoboth Avenue from the Boardwalk to Fourth Street from two hours to three.  It’s also increasing meter rates from $2 an hour to $3 on Rehoboth Avenue from the Boardwalk to Fourth Street, Baltimore and Wilmington Avenues from the Boardwalk to Second Street, and First Street from Baltimore Avenue to Wilmington Avenue.

Kuhnssays the goal is to keep people from monopolizing spaces.

“Most of this has been made in order to probably move the parking customer around. A lot of the problems that we’ve had with parking over the years has been, people have been saying that we have a parking issue, a parking problem in Rehoboth - not enough parking spaces,” said Kuhns.

Kuhns understands some people feel “parking will never be fixed in the City,” and he sometimes agrees. But he claims if you drive around the one-mile-square area of Rehoboth Beach there are empty parking spaces, even during the busiest time of the summer.

Kuhnsadds the cost of a weekly parking permit is also going up from $80 to $90.

The parking changes take effect on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend.
