Opt-out bill on hold in State Senate

Delaware Public Media

State senators are still mulling whether to release a bill from committee that would allow parents to opt their children out of taking the state's new Smarter Balanced Assessment.

An hour-long hearing on the proposal left supporters and opponents without any answers, as lawmakers adjourned the committee without acting.

It’s common for state senators to not hold public votes on bills heard in committee, instead garnering support for them behind closed doors to propel the legislation to the floor.

The measure has already been overwhelmingly approved in the House.

Gov. Jack Markell has staunchly opposed the bill, but hasn’t publicly said he would veto it should it cross his desk.
