One lane on Delaware Memorial Bridge reopens

Drivers crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge to enter the First State from New Jersey may get a bit of relief Thursday.

The Delaware River and Bay Authority – which operates the bridge – says one of three lanes closed on the Delaware-bound span for emergency work has reopened.  But the left two lanes remain closed and truck traffic is only allowed in the far right lane.

Three of four lanes were closed most of the day Wednesday as crews worked to replace three suspension ropes in close proximity to each other on that span.  The closure created lengthy back-ups – especially during the morning and afternoon commutes.

The second lane reopened shortly after 7 pm Wednesday, but repair work could stretch into the weekend, keeping the other lanes closed.

During the closures, the speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph.
