Nominations sought for National Small Business Week Awards

Delaware Public Media

The Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Delaware District Office is looking for the First State’s top small businesses.

In Delaware, an estimated 76,000 small businesses employ more than 55% of the First State’s workforce, according to John Fleming, Delaware director for the SBA.

And he says the state’s top small business will be recognized later this year in conjunction with National Small Business Week.

“It’s an annual event that we hold in the first week in May every year. And it’s been happening since 1963 - a proclamation by the President that we celebrate National Small Business Week. And what we do in all 50 States and also our Territories is, we nominate a small business of the year for each State,” Fleming said.

Fleming says other local categories include Minority-Owned Small Business of the Year, Women-Owned Small Business of the Year and Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

Categories are broken down - we have of course Small Business Person of the Year, we have Exporter of the Year, we have Family-Owned Business of the Year, we have Minority-Owned Business of the Year, Women-Owned Business of the Year and finally we have what we call Champion of the Year,” said Fleming.

The deadline for submissions is this week, Wednesday, January 9.

Nomination forms and additional information are available here.
