New look Hornets expect changes to bring success

Delaware State Univ.

Delaware State University football fans may need to keep a program handy when the Hornets open their 2016 season Thursday night at the University of Delaware.

DSU has remade its roster following last season’s 1-10 finish.

46 new faces are on the team this season and head coach Kenny Carter says he believes the turnover has resulted in a major upgrade in talent.

“No doubt.  It’s like night and day," said Carter.  "It was a drastic improvement that needed to be made. We vetted it through very strong and deliberate intentions in recruiting – and we felt we satisfied all the needs that we had.”

Carter notes he’s seen some of the greatest improvement at quarterback, running back and in the defensive secondary.

He adds that in addition to upgrading the team’s overall talent, the Hornets also have greater depth this year, leaving him confident DSU is poised to make major strides.

“Really, the only concern I have is that we’re young.  You’re going to make mistakes because you’re young and not having competed at the collegiate level," said Carter. "We’re going to have those growing pains, but when it comes to ability and just how they play, that’s not really a concern for me because we’re a lot better.”

Delaware State tangles with Delaware at 7 pm Thursday night at Delaware Stadium in Newark.
