Nearly 24,000 food items collected during Caroling on The Circle

Carolers brought more than just a little holiday spirit to The Circle in Georgetown earlier this week.

Sussex County carolers and other groups donated thousands of food items for the community this week.

More than 500 carolers gathered in downtown Georgetown Monday night for the 34th annual Caroling on The Circle event.

In addition to kicking off the holiday season with song, they capped off a month-long effort to collect food for those in need according to County Communications Director Chip Guy.

"The community really stepped up and came through with contributions that evening as well as in advance of the event on Monday night. And to date, since we launched the Caroling on The Circle “Pack the POD” campaign in early November, we have collected at least, or nearly 24,000 items,” said Guy.

Guy says all food collected will go to benefit local food pantries.

“It will go to about 15 area Food Banks and pantries. These are some of your smaller food closets. And a lot of these really depend on this infusion of goods during the holiday season to help get them through,” said Guy.

Guy notes “Pack the POD” was started in 1984 as part of the Delaware First initiative. To date, the community has donated 700,000 canned goods through the caroling on The Circle program throughout the course of its 34-year history.

You can still donate to the effort until December 29, by dropping off canned goods and non-perishable items between 8:30 and 4:30 Monday through Friday at the County Administrative Offices building on The Circle or the West Complex offices on Route 113.
