Anyone traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday this week will have plenty of company.
AAA Mid-Atlantic says the holiday travel volume this Thanksgiving will be the highest it’s been in 13 years.
AAA spokesman Ken Grant says more than 147,000 Delawareans are expected to hit the road later this week.
"We’re looking at more travelers than we’ve seen since 2005. We’re seeing this, primarily because of a strong economy and the lower gas prices. In fact, Delaware continues to have the lowest gas prices in the country. So those who are traveling either from Delaware, to Delaware or through Delaware, should plan on filling their gas tank up in the state," Grant said.
Grant says the holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, November 21, 2018 through Sunday, November 25, 2018.
Nationwide, AAA estimates that 54.3 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving - a 4.8% increase over last year.
Last year, more than 1.2 million vehicles passed through Delaware’s three main toll plazas on I-95 in Newark and on Route 1 at Biddles Corner and Dover - during the long Thanksgiving holiday.
