More flu cases confirmed at Young Correctional Institution

Delaware Public Media

The number of flu cases at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution remains on the rise.

There are now at least 28 confirmed cases of flu at Delaware's lower-security men's prison – but from 18 over the weekend.  An additional 17 cases are being evaluated and tested.

The outbreak at the northeast Wilmington prison, also known as Gander Hill, began last week.  The facility holds around 1,500 offenders.

In an effort to contain the situation, the Department of Corrections is screening offenders and continues to educate them about the importance of accepting flu vaccination. Voluntary screening has been extended to staff.

Other precautions remain in place, including diverting all new inmates to James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna. Visits, volunteer shifts and programs at Howard R. Young are also still canceled, and inmates' movements inside the prison are still limited.
