Milton Rails to Trails project set to begin this month

Work to complete Milton’s Rails to Trails extension is expected to get underway by the end of this month.

The $1 million trail extension from Federal Street to Lavinia Street adds another piece to the growing trail system in Sussex County.

“We’ve been working with the Milton community for some time really to get this project moving forward. And we’re happy to report, we’re moving forward with finalizing those plans,” said C.R. McLeod, director of communications for Delaware’s Department of Transportation (DelDOT).

He says the contractor, A-Del Construction, will begin by installing 1,600 feet of trail and rebuilding the railroad bridge along the route.

“It also includes a railroad trestle that will be converted to a really neat pedestrian and cycling bridge," said McLod. "So you know, we’re really excited about this addition to the trail that, again, will just help be a more connecting piece to the system that we’re trying to build throughout Sussex County.”

McLeod says the trail will back up to a number of communities and prior to starting the project, DelDOT worked with Milton officials to ensure it would not negatively impact those communities.

He adds there is also the opportunity to install lighting along the pathway should the town choose to do so later. He says conduits will be installed along the trail to accommodate them.  Adding lights would cost the town an estimated cost of $175,000, with Delmarva Power handling the installation.

The project should be completed by the end of June.
