Milford to test run new bike lanes

City of Milford

Milford is working with the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), the University of Delaware (UD) and Century Engineering to try out a new two-lane bi-directional bike path.

The lanes are set to be painted onto the eastern side of Marshall Street between SE Second Street and Watergate Boulevard North—a path cutting through a mostly residential part of the city. The city will later decide whether or not to keep the lanes based on public feedback.

“It’s to demonstrate what kind of bicycle infrastructure could be in place along Marshall street to improve the mobility of cyclists,” said Milford Planning Director Rob Pierce. “And it may have a beneficial impact on pedestrian movement as well.”

People living in the area and frequent travelers can provide feedback on the new lanes and fill out a survey at a UD website.

“It’s a temporary measure,” said Pierce. “We want to engage the residents along this stretch, along with people who would use it. I think any kind of feedback we could get from the community will play into the long term vision of what would happen there.”

Pierce says another option would be a single lane on either side of the street, but that design is not being piloted.

The initiative is part of Milford’s 2021 Bicycle Master Plan. Support for the project comes from the UD Institute for Public Administration’s Living Lab research group. The group will paint on the lanes and will also add vertical delineators, temporary curb extensions and crosswalks.

The new bike lanes will be there from Tuesday, June 15 to Friday, July 2.
