Lawmakers take issue with concrete crushing permit

Delaware Public Media

Two New Castle County lawmakers are calling on DNREC to block a permit application for a concrete crushing operation just south of Wilmington.

Senate Majority Leader David McBride and Rep. James Johnson told state officials to reject a permit application from Diamond Materials LLC for a roving cement crusher at 200 Marsh Lane. They argue that fine particulate dust from the operation can aggravate health problems and that residents are concerned about noise pollution and water runoff.

Last year, the company switched its permit request from a permanent operation at the location to starting a roving crushing business at the site instead.

Both McBride and Johnson introduced legislation to requiring any crusher to be at least 1,000 feet away from nearby properties, but it failed to gain traction.

DNREC officials are still considering the permit request.
