The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation (KNF) is offering a unique way to learn more about shipbuilding this weekend.

The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation (KNF) hosts its 4th annual Lego Shipbuilding Day Saturday.

The foundation’s executive director Cathy Parsells says it’s a great opportunity for children to come and test their lego and shipbuilding abilities.

“It’s a lot of fun. We have various levels of lego ship bottles that kids can come in and build - from beginning to advanced. And then we have a room for children to come and create their own lego ship creations,” Parsells said.

Parsells says children can also build a model ship at home and enter the Home-Build Contest.

The event will show kids how to build lego models of historic ships like the Kalmar Nyckel and various U.S. naval ships.

Parsells says the shipbuilding kits are designed by skill level so that all ages can participate.

She says model ships will be judged in each category by age group, with prizes awarded in each.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kalmar Nyckel’s Copeland Maritime Center in Wilmington.  It is free and open to the public.
