The Indian River School District tries again Tuesday to get residents to back a tax referendum - but it’s a scaled back request.
Voters in the district head back to the polls after rejecting a capital improvement and operating budget referendum in February.
Indian River superintendent Mark Steele says the district is removing the operating budget portion, and only asking residents reconsider the capital improvements question.
The referendum seeks $63-million dollars in funding for the construction of a new Sussex Central High School, an eight-classroom addition at Indian River High School and a four-classroom addition at Selbyville Middle School.
District officials say the average property owner would see their tax bill increase a maximum of $68.96, if the measure passes. And that would be phased in over four years.
Eliminating the operating budget request trims the impact on the average property owner by $18.59 per year.
Polls are open today from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Polling places are at East Millsboro Elementary School, Georgetown Elementary, Indian River High School, Long Neck Elementary School, Lord Baltimore Elementary and Selbyville Middle School.
