Winterthur’s signature event is back this year.
The Point-to-Point steeplechase race— known for its tailgates and high fashion— has been an annual tradition for more than forty years.
It’s the largest single-day fundraiser for Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, but last year it was cancelled due to the pandemic.
The event returns May 30, but with reduced attendance. It’ll focus on the race itself, with no classic car show, carriage parade or food and drink sales.
“We’re going back to our roots with a smaller event,” said Mark Nardone, Winterthur’s communications manager. “The original race in 1979 was really just a group of people picnicking on the hill while they watched the horses race.”
Nardone says usually the event draws more than 10,000 attendees.
“This year, we can only have 3,600 people unfortunately, but that will still be a nice group of people,” he said. “We are asking them to bring their picnics, bring their refreshments, come and enjoy the afternoon.”
Organizers say they hope to return to the event’s traditional look and feel next year.
Attendees with “lifetime rights” to tailgate spaces have until April 15 to purchase tickets. Any remaining spaces will be offered to the public April 16.
