The Green - October 9, 2020

Listen to this edition of The Green or individual segments below:

This week, Delawareans who already requested vote-by-mail ballots for November’s general elections started receiving them and could begin filling them out and sending them in.

The state’s new vote-by-mail system was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and has withstood at least one legal challenge.

Delaware Public Media’s Sophia Schmidt has more on the path takento bring mail-in voting to the First State.

Some of the initial assessment of mail-in voting system is already happening in the wake of the state's September primary.

Most who chose to vote in person in during that primary said they didn’t trust the new system.

And Delaware Public Media’s Roman Battaglia looks into how groups are looking to build more confidence in it.

Down ballot on Election day November 3rd is a race for four at-large positions on Wilmington City Council.

The city charter allows no more than three to come from one political party, and since registered Democrats heavily outnumber Republicans in Wilmington – the three Democrats on the ballot are likely to earn seats.

That leaves three GOP candidates hoping to become - in all likelihood - the only Republican on city council.

Delaware Public Media's Mark Fowser has more on this race.

Discussions about work to address education issues in the First State often focus on school leaders, Dept. of Education officials and lawmakers or groups created by them, like the Redding Consortium.  But there are others trying to make a difference – parents, private citizens and grassroots groups that advocate for change.

Over the next two weeks, Delaware Public Media contributor Larry Nagengast looks at that latter group - then and now.

This week, he checks in with somefighting the fight since the 1970s when desegregating schools was the focus of the battle to get their perspective.

A 53-year-old, Wilmington-based, nonprofit peace and justice organization based is showcasing its new virtual art museum.

Delaware Pacem in Terris created the museum for its 5th annual Visionary Peace Youth Art Exhibition.

And in this week’s Arts Playlist, Delaware Pacem in Terris executive director Shara Smith discusses the exhibition and its impact with Delaware Public Media's Kelli Steele.
