The Green - May 29, 2020

Listen to this edition of The Green or individual segments below:

Delaware begins Phase 1 of its reopening plan this Monday June 1. But even as many things start to come back to life, how they operate will be different.

That’s especially true for a number of traditional summer activities.

Last week, we offered a look at how summer camps are affected.  This week, we turn to another summer staple: community pools.

They are allowed to open, but with restrictions, and contributor Eileen Dallabrida this week spent some time surveying First State pools to see what their plans and expectations are.

Changes to the state’s guidance on reopening has opened the door for school and school districts to offer high school seniors some kind of in-person graduation experience.

Any event held will bear little resemblance to past commencements that drew throngs of happy, cheering family members.  There will be plenty of rules and lots of social distancing.

And even though scaled-down in-person events are now permitted, some schools are sticking to their plans for virtual ceremonies or combining in-person and virtual celebrations of the Class of 2020.

Delaware Public Media’s Mark Fowser offers a snapshot of how its all playing out across the First State.

The Delaware Botanic Gardens, located along Pepper Creek in Dagsboro, opened to the public last September after years of planning.

The 37-acre coastal garden was supposed to reopen for the season in March, but did not because of the coronavirus crisis.

The Gardens' deputy executive director and director of horticultur Brian Trader says staff and volunteers are still working on various projects as they hold out hope to welcome visitors some time this year.

Trader recently spoke to Delaware Public Media’s Kelli Steele about these various projects, and their virtual engagement with people.

The coronavirus dramatically altered life for high schoolers in Delaware.

Many are getting more sleep, trying out new hobbies or playing more video games. Others are struggling with online school, social isolation and persistent worries about the virus.

Delaware Public Media partners with McKean and Mount Pleasant High Schools in the Red Clay and Brandywine school districts to work with students in those schools when classes are in session in those buildings.

But with students all working remotely, Delaware Public Media’s youth media producer Sophia Schmidt tried something different - collecting audio journal entries from radio students at these schools over the past month.  The result is their pandemic experiences, in their own words.
