Gov. Markell proposes new tax to fund clean-up of state water

Earlier this week – Gov. Jack Markell provided details on his plan to clean up Delaware’s water and waterways. To pay for the comprehensive plan, Markell is asking for a fee collected through property taxes on residential and commercial properties that would generate 30 million annually. That fee is to expected to cost the average homeowner about $45 to $50 a year.
The Green sat down DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara this week to learn about the plan and how the Markell administration intends to garner the support needed to make it happen. (More)
Hunters struggle to curb abundant snow geese

The relationship between humans and the wildlife around them can get dicey at time. And in Delaware there’s a perfect example this occasional conflict – and what can be done to address it.
Snow geese.
A Conservation Order is currently in place in the First State that allows additional hunting of the geese with fewer conditions than normal hunting season --- all to help control the snow goose population --- a population that can ravage farmland and wetlands.
The Green spend some time with Director of Delaware’s Division of Fish and Wildlife David Saveikis to learn more about the order and if, in fact, its working. (More)
Volunteers ready to guide visitors looking for First State National Monument

It was just about a year ago Vice President Joe Biden helped announced Delaware finally had a national monument of its own – with sites in Old New Castle, the Woodlawn property in Brandywine Hundred and the Green in Dover designated to be part of the newly created First State National Monument
So a year later – where do things stand in making the monument concept a reality?

Kitchen Confidential: Delawareans are dipping their toes into the restaurant biz

Opening a new restaurant can be a daunting task – especially if you are relatively new to owning an eatery.
According to the National Restaurant Association 30 percent of new restaurants fail in the first year, and of those that survive, another 30% close in the next 2 years.
So why do people do it?
Contributor Pam George of Small Wonder, Big Bites found some of the First State’s newest restaurant owners and asked that very question.
One of the people she met is Donnie Merrill. The former chef at Krazy Kats in Montchanin is now owner and chef at Skipback in Newark –which opened last summer.
Merrill invited The Green to his restaurant to tell us his story. (More)
Enlighten Me: Art auction builds funds for Habitat for Humanity in New Castle County
