As a news director, I’m always worried about that story that slips through the cracks. So I’ve asked my staff – and I’m asking you - to Enlighten Me about a story, a place, a person in the First State that I – and everyone else - should know more about. It can be serious, quirky, inspiring or silly. Below are a few of the recent Enlighten Me segments that have aired in 2013. Happy New Year!

-Tom Byrne, WDDE News Director

The power of the bully puppet

In this segment of Enlighten Me – we’re talking about bullying.

There’s been a variety of initiatives launched recently to address this issue –but WDDE’s Karl Malgiero found one what we think is a pretty unique.

Instead of relying on recognizable names and the power of the bully pulpit - Middletown High School Drama and Spanish teacher Michael Husni uses the power of the bully puppet.

Husni developed a puppet show with some of his students to help young children better recognize bullying when they see it. (More)

Converging Film and Faith

In this segment, Enlighten Me goes to the movies.

In November, The Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover screened God’s Amazing Grace…Is Just a Prayer Away. The movie was produced by Calvary Pictures, a subsidiary of Dover’s Calvary Baptist Church and shot in part in Dover.

WDDE’s Tom Byrne sat down with its writer and director, Dr. Warren Rhodes, to discuss the film, its award-winning debut last October and churches getting into the movie business. (More)

Wilmington STIR

This Enlighten Me also comes from WDDE producer Karl Malgiero, who brings to our attention a fascinating exercise in brainstorming late last year in Wilmington.

It’s called Wilmington STIR. The idea: bring people and their ideas together over a meal. The money everyone pays for the meal becomes a grant, and over dinner you make the case for your idea or project.

When all is said and done, everyone votes on the ideas and the winner or winners take home the grant money – and hopefully everyone gets some food for thought along the way. (More)

Digging up First State history

[jwplayer config="jw-audio-only_post" mediaid="52300"]

Our first ever Enlighten Me segment comes from WDDE Political reporter James Dawson – who shows us there’s always an opportunity to dig up some more First State history.

Lighting up Legislative Hall

[jwplayer config="jw-audio-only_post" mediaid="53580"]

In this Enlighten Me segment, we shine the light on Legislative Hall - literally.

WDDE's James Dawson tells us why the state's capital building gets a luminous makeover from time to time. (More)

History Matters: Quaker Officer in the Civil War

[jwplayer config="jw-audio-only_post" mediaid="54466"]

For the past two years, WDDE teamed with the Delaware Historical Society to produce a monthly online feature called History Matters. Produced by Ben Szmidt, History Matters digs into the Delaware Historical Society’s archives each month to explore connections between key people, places, and events in history and present-day news.

In this History Matters segment, Ben introduces us to author Justin Carisio and his book - A Quaker Officer in the Civil War. The book examines the memoir of Henry Gawthrop, a Delaware officer during the Civil War. (More)
