Charter schools were back in the news this week after U.S. District Court Judge Leonard Stark ordered the state Department of Education to renew Reach Academy for Girls’ charter for one year.

Reach was slated to close at the end of the academic year after its charter was not renewed over academic issues.

WDDE contributor April Hall spend time talking at length with Reach Academy board president Rev. Lloyd Casson -- as well as Reach parents and students. (More)

The order from U.S. District Court judge Leonard Stark was a short-term victory for Reach Academy - giving it a one-year reprieve from the state’s decision close the charter over academic issues at the end of this school year – but not everyone believes it’s good news for Reach Academy students.

That group includes Kathleen Conn – a Neumann University professor and Widener Law adjunct professor who specializes in education law. The retired elementary school principal was highly critical of Judge Stark’s order. (More)

While Reach Academy continues its court battle to avoid closure, the roster of charters in Delaware will be growing significantly over the next two years.

5 new charters are getting ready to open this fall, and another in 2015. Additionally, eight new charter applications were submitted to the Department of Education this month.

The new applicants and schools seeking charter renewals face a more rigorous process now thanks the “performance framework” put into place in 2012.

WDDE contributor Larry Nagengast spent time looking at these new charters – as well as the state’s approval and oversight process. (More)

This week - our Karl Malgiero caught up with Mean Lady’s Katie Dill at the Deer Park in Newark to talk Firefly and more. (More)

Leadership Delaware continues its quest to develop tomorrow’s leaders

[jwplayer config="jw-audio-only_post" mediaid="55328"]

This week in our Enlighten Me segment – we meet a group looking to develop the next generation of leaders in the First State.

Leadership Delaware is a non-profit founded six years ago by former Delaware State Republican Party chair Terry Strine that annually brings together about 20 individuals – 25 to 40 years old – with the goal of fostering their leadership skills.

It requires selected participants to attend two day-long sessions each month for 10 months.

This year’s Leadership Delaware class gets to work this week and WDDE’S Tom Byrne sat down with Strine to learn what it’s all about. (More)
