2014 Candidate Conversations: U.S. Senator

As part of our election coverage, Delaware Public Media is offering a series of Candidate Conversations. We’ve reached out to all candidates that have filed to run in a statewide race and invited them to sit down with us. Candidates in each race are being asked the same set of questions to allow you to get to know then and compare them.

There is a primary in the race for the US Senate seat currently held by Democrat Chris Coons. That primary is on the Republican side where 81-year-old Milton retiree Carl Smink, a former engineer and Air Force veteran, makes his first run for office in the First State against New Castle small business owner Kevin Wade. Wade previously ran for Senate two years ago, losing to Tom Carper in a race that also included Independent Alex Pires and the Green Party’s Andrew Groff.

This week, we hear from both Smink and Wade on The Green. (More)

Class in session at the Community Education Building

[jwplayer config="jw-audio-only_post" mediaid="66883"]

Over two years after it was donated by Bank of America through the Longwood Foundation - a former credit card company building sitting at the corner of 12th and French Streets in Wilmington has completed its transformation from place of business to educational hub.

The Community Education Building officially opened this week. For now it houses two charter schools – Kuumba Academy and Academia Antonia Alonso.

It’s opening had some hiccups, including a major issue for Antonia Alonsa with bussing kids home on day one Monday, but contributor Larry Nagengast, who visited the building this week, reports that hasn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the building’s operators and the leaders of the two schools in their attempt to revive public education in the state’s largest city.
