Gov. Carney taps Cade to take over Labor Dept.

State of Delaware

Gov. John Carney (D-Delaware) has made his pick for the next secretary of the Department of Labor.

Carney is nominating Cerron Cade to replace Patrice Gilliam Johnson resigned last week to take a position at Delaware State University.  Gilliam-Johnson leaves the office February 2nd.

Cade is currently as the director of the Division of Small Business, Development and Tourism.

“Cerron has a proven ability to lead, and the knowledge and experience necessary to take on this important role,” said Carney in a statement. “The Department of Labor’s work connecting Delawareans with relevant job training and workforce development programs has never been more important. Cerron understands the needs of Delaware businesses from his time at the Small Business Division and, before that, at the Delaware Economic Development Office. I’m confident that Cerron’s experience will serve Delaware and Delaware workers well."

He was the acting director of the Delaware Economic Development Office before Carney dissolved it last year and moved many of its functions into the Department of State.

He previously served as former Gov, Jack Markell’s Legislative Liaison and as then-Congressman John Carney’s State Projects Director.

Cade’s nomination needs approval of the State Senate.
