Gov. Carney, other governors urge federal action on guns

Delaware Public Media

Gov. John Carney is one of several governors urging the federal government to move forward on gun legislation.

Carney joined 11 other governors signing a letter to President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell calling for action to curb gun violence. The letter cites the 34 people killed recently in California, Texas and Ohio in mass shootings.

Carney said they believe gun safety legislation works best when it’s applied nationwide. And the American public supports action.

“I think the circumstances are there that justify taking some action and I think reasonable action, action that most Americans support and frankly, most legislators, I believe support as well," he said. "Common sense things that can be done.”

The governors signing the letter include the states of New York, Rhode Island, Michigan and Oregon.

The governors support red flag legislation, universal background checks, and bans on assault-style weapons and high capacity magazines.
