Food Bank to promote trauma-informed care

Food Bank of Delaware

The Food Bank of Delaware is using its biennial Coming Together conference to promote trauma-informed care.

Last fall, Gov. John Carney issued an executive order to make Delaware a more trauma-informed state. This was meant to provide new supports for people with Adverse Childhood Experience, or ACEs, as studies show they are more likely to experience negative life outcomes.

The order designated May as trauma awareness month.

Food Bank spokeswoman Kim Turner says next month’s conference will explore using trauma-informed care to combat poverty.

“We’re hoping that the speakers will be able to bring some insight for people who are in attendance on how me can serve our clients in a different way that might be able to address some of those traumas they might have experienced,” said Turner.

The conference will be chaired by Delaware’s First Lady Tracey Quillen Carney and will feature speeches from health officials from across the country and NFL football player turned North Carolina farmer Jason Brown.

Turner says the all-day affair will also have multiple breakout sessions to discuss specific topics.

“We have something for everybody we have breakout sessions focusing on behavioral health, youth topics and then also underrepresented populations,” she said.

Turner adds there are accredited continued educational opportunities at the event for both law professionals and dieticians.

It takes place April 4th at the Chase Center.
