Food Bank of Delaware holds additional drive-thru events this week

The Food Bank of Delaware latest round of drive-thru events is delivering food to Delaware residents in need statewide this week.

People started lining up Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. at Dover Internaional Speedway for the second of Food Bank of Delaware’s three drive-thru events this week, prompting that giveaway to start early.

Cars coming in had dwindle to a trickle by noontime. The Food Bank’s Kim Turner says by that point over 1,500 households were helped with food to spare.

And what was leftover will be distributed in other ways.

"We'll go out to our community. We do community pop-ups. We'll distribute it out through our network of partner organizations," said Turner. "We have seen that demands for assistance have nearly doubled since covid-19 has started."

The Food Bank also distributed food at the Christiana Mall on Monday, Dover Downs International Speedway on Wednesday and plans an drive-thru event at Sussex Central High School in Georgetown on Friday.

Turner says over 2,200 households were helped on Monday at Christiana Mall, and the Food Bank is prepared to help 2,500 households in Sussex County on Friday.

Turner reiterated that the Food Bank has plenty of food stored thanks to their new facility in Newark, allowing for more room to store food and better loading docks to bring in more truckloads.
