A child in Delaware has caught the flu.
The state’s Division of Public Health reports a five-year-old from Sussex County is the first pediatric flu case in the 2018-2019 season.
It’s the sixth case overall since the start of the new flu season and the first of the type B influenza virus.
All other cases have involved people in Kent and New Castle Counties between the ages of 26 and 72.
12 additional flu cases were recorded last month before the official start to the season.
Last year’s flu season was a record breaker in Delaware with more than 9,000 flu cases, more than 1,200 hospitalizations and 35 flu related deaths.
The state is urging all Delawareans over the age of 6 months to get their flu vaccination.
Director of Public Health Dr. Karyl Rattay says, “Now is the time.”
