First State gas prices inch up for the first time in three weeks

Delaware Public Media

First State gas prices have finally inched up, after holding steady for the last three weeks.

AAA Mid-Atlantic reports the average price for a gallon of regular in First State increased by 2 cents from $2.60 to $2.62 in the past week.

That price is still nearly a dollar less than what Delaware drivers were paying a year ago at an average of $3.60.

Delawaregasprices.com reports there are just under a dozen stations selling a gallon of regular for $2.54 or slightly less  – mostly in New Castle County.

Delaware drivers are paying 12 cents below the national average, which rose 4 cents to $2.74 since last week.

The national average has been rising for well over a month, up a quarter since the end of April. The oversupply in the global oil market has kept prices low compared to last year, but prices now are trending higher due to increasing crude oil prices.

Officials expect that automotive travel in the Mid-Atlantic this weekend will be up 4.6 percent over last year. This represents a 10-year high in travel volume. Most drivers will likely pay the lowest Memorial Day weekend gas prices in the last five years.
