Few new cases of COVID-19 reported Wednesday

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The state announced an unusually low number of new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases Wednesday. Public health officials reported just 30 new cases as of Tuesday evening, along with nine new virus-related deaths.

Stacey Hofmann, a spokesperson working with the state's Joint Information Center for its coronavirus response, said by email Wednesday the low number of new cases is "likely due to a smaller amount of samples being processed by labs over the holiday weekend."

The state’s total number of cases since March 11th  is now 9,096. Its death toll stands at 344.

The latest victims were between 52 to 99 years old. Five were New Castle County residents and four were Sussex County residents. All had underlying health conditions and five were residents of long-term care facilities.

Current hospitalizations continue to drop. They fell by five in Wednesday’s announcement to 196 — the lowest since early April. Thirty-six people are critically ill.

Another 107 patients are considered recovered from the virus, bringing that total above 4,900 since the start of the outbreak.
