Farmers' Almanac predicts snowy winter for Delaware, but can it be trusted?

Delaware Public Media

It may be warm now, but Delaware could be in for a snowy winter according to the Farmers’ Almanac.

But National Weather Service Meteorologist Joe Miketta is not quite ready to agree or disagree with that prognostication.

“We’re still quite a bit of ways, of course. But looking into the crystal ball right now for the winter season, which for us is December, January and February, just based on what we think the conditions are going to be in terms of the upper atmosphere, we’re thinking probably normal to slightly above normal temperatures for the winter and maybe normal snowfall,” said Miketta.

Miketta notes it really depends on a bunch of different factors this far out.

The 2017-18 Farmers’ Almanac is on store shelves now.

The cold, snowy winter it predicts for Delaware is also predicted for the entire Northeast. But last year, the book predicted heavy snows for the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions - wrongly.

That's why Miketta takes the Farmers Almanac's predictions with a grain of salt.

“My feeling with the Farmers’ Almanac is if it works for you, use it. I mean my Dad used to use it all the time. He always claimed it worked well. I don’t think that’s always the case, but if it works for you use it, said Miketta.

The Farmers’ Almanac also says a hurricane or tropical storm could be on the horizon for the Atlantic seaboard September 28-30 and October will be fair and windy for the most part.

This year's edition of Farmers’ Almanacis the 200th edition.
