Eleven new COVID-19 deaths reported, positive cases continue to decline

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

COVID-19 related deaths in the First State jumped by double digits Friday. It's the first time the state has seen more than ten deaths on a single day in nearly two weeks.

State health officials report eleven new deaths, the most in one day since May 16th when the state reported fifteen.

The latest victims were between 45 to 95 years-old. Eight lived in New Castle County.  One was a Kent County resident and two lived in Sussex County. Ten had underlying health conditions and five were long-term care facility residents.

The total number of deaths statewide since the pandemic began is now 356.

New positive cases remain low, with 65 reported today Friday.  That brings the total to 9,236 since March 11th.

At the county level, the most new positive cases were found in New Castle County.  Fifty-four were reported in the First State’s most populous area.  Twelve were found in Kent County.  Delaware’s COVID-19’s hotspot, Sussex County, had just four.

Hospitalizations continue to decrease down eleven to 183.  That’s the lowest level since April 11th. 32 people are critically ill.

More Delawareans are recovering from the disease.  State health officials report 93 additional recoveries.  The overall total is now 5,103.

More than 48,000 have tested negative for the virus.

The state also offered its weekly update on long-term care facility data Friday.  There were 28 new deaths at these facilities in the past week. Delaware now reports 228 of its 356 COVID-19 related deaths have involved long-term care facility residents. 10 facilities have seen 10 or more fatalities.  Genesis Healthcare's Milford Center has had the most – 31, but did not report any more this week.  In all, 31 long-term care facilities in the state have had at least one death.

Long-term care facilities also accounted for 80 new positive cases this week.  687 of the state's 9.336 cases since March 11th have involved these facilities.
