Effort to curb delinquent child support payments praised in GOP message

A Republican lawmaker is highlighting efforts in the General Assembly to deal with delinquent child support payments in the First State.

In the weekly GOP message, Rep. Tim Dukes says federal statistics indicate nearly 337-million-dollars in child support payments went unpaid in Delaware in Fiscal Year 2014.

But Dukes notes that after forming a bipartisan task force to examine the issue – lawmakers are making progress on eating away at that number.

“Last year, we enacted a new law to make it more difficult for parents to avoid paying child support by moving across state lines. In the current session, pending bills will make it easier to collect child support. One of these measures will allow money to be withheld from court settlements and other financial awards to pay support obligations.

Dukes adds it’s critical to keep working at the problem to ensure children involved get the support they need to learn and grow.
