DSU to host Observatory Open House this weekend

Delaware Public Media

Do you like to stargaze?  Are you interested in the planets? Here's how you can do both this Saturday night.

Delaware State University hosts an Observatory Open House this Saturday night to give people a closer look at the stars and planets.

Dr. Matt Bobrowsky is the director of Observatory and Science Outreach at DSU.

He says there are two parts to the Open House.

“First, we have a live presentation this time. It will be presented by me. And the title of this presentation on August 18, will be “A Brief History of the Universe.” I will be summarizing 14-billion years of history in less than an hour,” Bobrowsky said.

“The universe has been expanding for about the past 13.8 billion years. And it has been changing during that time; galaxies formed, stars formed, planets formed and life formed on at least one planet. So, that’s pretty exciting.”

Dr. Bobrowsky says after his presentation in Room 223 of the Mishoe Science Center, visitors will be taken to the Observatory where - weather permitting - they will be able to view the night skies through DSU’s powerful telescope. He says the moon and several planets, including Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Venice will be visible.

Bobrowsky says if the weather doesn’t cooperate, the presentation will still go on and visitors will have a chance to look at the telescope.

Bobrowsky says the Observatory was part of the original 1964 construction of the first-ever science building on campus and was the brainchild of former DSU President Dr. Luna Mishoe.

Saturday’s Open House starts at 8 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
