Delaware State University is receiving federal funding to help preserve a historic building on its campus.

The National Park Service is giving DSU $500,000 to make repairs to Loockerman Hall.

The university will match that and devote $1 million over the next three years to work on the building.

DSU spokesman Carlos Holmes said the repairs will focus on outside windows, the roof and masonry.

“But right now, we just want to preserve the building," he said.

Holmes said the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“We inherited that building when we purchased the property in 1891," he said. "And it served as the main college building, it served it as a residential hall, classes were taught there and it was used until about 1960.”

It’s served as a main building, a residential hall and a place where classes were taught until the 1960s. But it’s only used now for special events.
