The post office in Dover is planning to move to a new location in a few years.
The federal agency has been at the Loockerman Street site in Downtown Dover since it was built in 1964. Earlier this week, the U.S. Postal Service announced it is not renewing its lease there, which expires in 2020.
Dover Mayor Robin Christensen says the move is necessary because there currently isn’t enough parking to handle mail trucks and growing traffic at the Dover Library built next door.
“After we built the City of Dover Library about five years ago. The congestion around the post office wasn’t really, I think, conducive to them doing the retail business, nor was it conducive to them doing the mail sorting operation,” said Christensen.
The city is working with the Postal Service to find a new location. Christensen says there are several possibilities, but he would like to see them stay downtown.
“I, as an individual, think historically it should be located someplace downtown, but there may be other people who think that it should go elsewhere. So that’s the good thing about the process. Everybody is going to have an input as to what the final location is going to be,” he said.
The Postal Service will make a presentation highlighting their needs at a new location to Dover City Council on June 11th.
