Dover Days kicks-off series of events expected to draw crowds to state capital

Dover Days

Delaware’s annual capital city colonial heritage festival kicks off Friday.

The 82nd annual Dover Days Festival will be celebrated mainly around  the historic Legislative Mall and Green in the state capital.

Dover Days is one of Delaware's longest running events. The citywide celebration offers one of the state's top annual history and heritage events, along with nearly nonstop activities.

Lorraine Dion of Kent County Tourism estimates the event drew approximately 45 thousand visitors in 2014.

She says Dover Days, along with the Firefly Festival and Kent County’s two upcoming country musical festivals, will be a boon to the local economy and not just to the hospitality industry.

“Say you are coming in to go to a festival or go to Dover Days and you want to buy your cup of coffee at WAWA, you want to go get gas, you forgot your makeup;attendance to museums goes up, that helps them when they write grants or people looking for corporate money to sponsor their own events," said Dion. "It trickles down  and it helps everyone.”
