The Division of Motor Vehicles starts issuing its latest group of newly available low digit tags at its Dover, Georgetown, Delaware City and Wilmington locations Dec. 1.
The much sought after black and white plates are often seen as a status symbol here in the First State.
In fact, there is quite a market for lower digit plates. One online retailer has black and white tags for sale for thousands of dollars.
Low number black tags are also often auctioned off in fundraisers and charity events.
To get one of these newly available low number plates, drivers need to pay transfer fees to move from their old plate to the new one. They will also have the option to pay an additional $110 for the stainless steel or porcelain black tags.
Anyone hoping to get a tag will also need their license, title, vehicle mileage and insurance information ready.
Those leasing or paying off a vehicle can put a hold on a plate by having the lien holder mail their title to the DMV.
The new low digit tags will be available while the supply lasts.
The tags don’t give owners any special privileges though. In the end, they’re just license plates.
