Div. of Public Health announces Delaware's 2nd flu death this season

Delaware Public Media

Delaware’s Division of Public Health reports another flu related death — the state’s second this season. The latest victim is an 83-year-old New Castle County woman. She died last week at a local hospital. DPH officials say she had additional health issues and was a resident at a long-term care facility.

It’s been an active start to the flu season in Delaware.   The state has already seen 129 laboratory-confirmed flu cases, up from 91 this time last year. There have been almost double the number of flu related hospitalizations, 49 this year compared to 26 last season

DPH continues to urge those who have not had their flu vaccination to get one, and is encouraging medical providers to begin antiviral treatment for all hospitalized flu patients. Antiviral drugs are only available through prescription.

Those at high-risk for complications experiencing flu-related symptoms should contact their primary care physician immediately. Those at high-risk include pregnant women and those with chronic disorders.
