DelDOT still repairing flood damage from last week's storms

Courtesty of DelDOT's Jim Westhoff

Crews are still repairing damaged roads in Sussex County due to extensive flooding from last week’s steady rainfall.

High water washed away the soil foundation of Beaver Dam Road near Johnson and East Elliot’s Dam Roads, causing the pavement to crumble.

DelDOT officials say crews rebuilt that foundation over the weekend and are hoping to repave it within the next few days to reopen the road.

Damage estimates are still being calculated.

A handful of other roads in Sussex County are also closed due to flooding damage or high water.

The U.S. Geological Survey shows nearly a foot of rain fell in some areas of southern Delaware during last week’s storms.

Even more rain could hit the First State this weekend should Hurricane Matthew make landfall along the East Coast or skim it.
