DelDOT reports busy travel during Thanksgiving weekend

Numbers from Delaware’s Department of Transportation show Thanksgiving holiday travel in the First State was about the same as a year ago.

DelDOT reports for a second straight year, just over 1.2 million motorists rolled through state toll plazas during the five-day weekend running from Wednesday through Sunday.

The overall count was only about 8,000 higher than in 2017, but there was a shift in where people were driving.  While the Route 1 toll plazas at Biddles Corner and Dover both saw increases in traffic, the I-95 plaza in Newark saw a drop of just over 14,500 vehicles.

Despite that decrease in traffic, the I-95 plaza was the busiest during the weekend, with about 572,000 passing through there.

And Wednesday was busiest day on state roads during the holiday– with just over 287,000 cars counted at the three plazas.

DelDOT officials estimate that over $3.2 million in tolls were collected during the extended holiday weekend.
