DelDOT calls for rough evening commute

Tom Byrne/Delaware Public Media

DelDOT spokesman Jim Westhoff says Thursday's afternoon drive home could be difficult thanks to the combination of the heavy snow accumulation and cold temperatures.

"This evening’s commute will be very slick. We haven’t gotten to any roads yet except the main roads, so drivers need to be very careful driving home this evening," he told Delaware Public Media Thursday.

Westhoff added that rock salt becomes less effective in extreme cold, and the forecast calls for possible record lows in or near the single digits up and down Delaware tonight.

DelDOT advises that if you must drive, that you go slowly and keep a good distance between your vehicle and other cars. Always give snow plows lots of room.

Getting around will also be hampered by the lack of DART bus service around the state.  DART decided to suspend servicein all three counties early in the afternoon while most routes shutdown by 4 pm.
