Delaware's first medical marijuana center to open this month

Delaware Public Media

After years of delay, Delaware’s first medical marijuana dispensary will open to the public by the end of the month.

First State Compassion Center will host a patient orientation event June 18 and 19 prior to the opening.

The legislature passed and Gov. Jack Markell signed legislation legalizing medical marijuana in 2011, but he soon told state officials to delay implementing the program due to federal legal pressure.

Several Delaware residents have paid to enroll in the program since then, but have had no place to legally buy marijuana.

Markell eventually rekindled those efforts in 2013, with the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services eventually awarding a contract last August.

The center will officially open June 26.
