Delaware's Congressional Delegation reacts to Trump aide plea deal

Delaware’s Congressional members are weighing in on Friday's decision by Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn to plead guilty to lying to FBI investigators.

The plea comes as part of the investigation into Trump campaign contacts with Russian officials.

Michael Flynn admitted he lied to FBI officials shortly after Trump’s inauguration about conversations with a Russian ambassador. He resigned from the administration in February.

Sen. Tom Carper (D-Delaware) says it appears Flynn was offered a plea deal so he would cooperate with Special Counsel Bob Mueller’s investigation. Mueller’s investigating possible Trump campaign collusion with the Russian government in last year’s elections.

“I think we should let the investigation follow its course and really get to the truth," he said. "And that’s what I want and I think that’s what most most Americans want.”

Carper adds he trusts Mueller to continue conducting a fair investigation into possible wrongdoing by other members of the Trump campaign and administration.

“The question is to what extent was there complicity in the involvement of the Russians within the campaign of Donald Trump and if there was not, we need to know that," he said. "And if there was complicity, we need to know that as well.”

Flynn has released a statement saying he is cooperating with Mueller’s investigation.

Carper also says he was unaware of President Donald Trump pressuring senators to end their probe, as reported by the New York Times.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Delaware) said in a statement the guilty plea shows a clear indication of illegal activity. Both senators and Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Delaware) agree that Mueller must be allowed to continue his investigation.
