Delaware unemployment drops again in October

Delaware Public Media

The unemployment rate continues to drop nationally and in Delaware, according to the state Department of Labor.

The First State’s unemployment rate peaked at just under 16 percent in May and has since been on a rapid decline.

It fell to 5.6 percent in October, down from 8.3 percent September. The national rate also dropped at that time from 7.9 to 6.9 percent.

But Delaware’s rate is still above what was reported this time last year.

In October 2019, unemployment in Delaware was at 4 percent and there were about 7,500 fewer unemployed Delawareans.

The First State also added 3,200 jobs last month for a total of 430,100, but that’s still 36,000 fewer than what was reported this time last year.

The bulk of the job loss has been in the leisure and hospitality industry as a result of COVID-19 closures and restrictions.
