Delaware suspends former Chief Medical Examiner's license

Delaware Public Media

The News Journal reports the state has suspended the medical license of a former Delaware Chief Medical Examiner.

Dr. Richard Callery served in that position for 20 years until he was fired in 2014 during an investigation into evidence tampering at the state’s Controlled Substances Lab.

Callery was never charged in that scandal, but two other employees accused of stealing and selling drug evidence pleaded to lesser charges or had those charges dropped.

Callery did plead no contest the following year to two counts of official misconduct after using state resources to run a private consulting business. He was sentenced to 11 months probation, paid $100,000 in restitution and had his medical license suspended for two years.

The News Journal reports Callery's license has been suspended again, this time for 18 months, by Delaware’s Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline.

The complaint against Callery sparking this decision will only become public if the board orders disciplinary action.
