Delaware State Fair launches its centennial event

Delaware State Fair

The 100th annual Delaware State Fair kicked off Thursday. For its centennial year the fair has a few new attractions.

It’s offering its usual food, rides, music and agriculture. But this year marks the return of the Livestock Parade of Champions. There will also be a parade featuring the Budweiser Clydesdales team and a 9,500 square-foot outdoor truck display.

Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control also made an investment into its building on the state fairgrounds—adding air conditioning and educational displays.

“Communication and outreach is really important for our department to explain to folks in Delaware and even people from outside what we’re doing to protect their public health and their environment—the opportunities for boating and fishing in parks,” said DNREC Secretary Sean Garvin. “So we wanted to do something that would open this up a little bit more and use it as an educational tool.”

Garvin also points out the state is putting on a duck and goose calling competition, bird box construction demonstration, and a public education booth featuring different DNREC divisions.

“We give them an opportunity for a day to come in and kind of educate folks on the stuff we have going on,” said Garvin. “[Thursday] it’s the Invasive Species Commission. They are educating folks about invasive species in the state of Delaware.”

The fair has also launched a new centennial website this year with a “plan my day” feature.

The fair is displaying a video on its 100-year history throughout the event. The DVD and a soft bound book are available for purchase.

All fair attendees are receiving two-pack Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets as a piece of birthday cake for the state fair. Fireworks displays are scheduled for eight nights during the 10-day event.
