Delaware lawmakers introduce amendment to bill legalizing marijuana

Delaware Public Media

Delaware State Rep. Helene Keeley and State Sen. Margaret Rose Henry are making a final push to pass legislation legalizing recreational pot.

The pair have introduced an amendment to the bill that drops the number of votes needed to pass it from a two-thirds vote in both chambers to a three-fifths vote. That means that instead of requiring 28 votes in the Delaware House, it would need only 25. It also means it needs one less vote, 13, in the state Senate.

Henry said she’s hopeful it will pass in the next 10 days.

“We took into consideration all of the recommendations and objections which were raised and addressed them in the amendment,” she said.

Henry and Keeley co-chaired a task force on making adult pot use legal that met from September 2017 through this February.

The amendment adds a number of that group’s recommendations, including additional money for law enforcement, seed to sale tracking and banning products from appealing to children.

The legislation dies if it’s not passed by both chambers by the end of the month.
